This is a vintage Angenieux movie camera lens. According to the seller, the previous owner bought a nice old Leica lens and sacrificed its lens and used the body for the Angenieux. The lens has been modified to have a coupling function and it can be used in Rangefinder camera like M3, M4 but there are dark corners. For use in the Sony A7 is fine.

This is not a projector lens. It came from a film camera unit is now remounted to a 50mm leica lens barrel and original Leica M mount, and added range finder coupling, then properly centred. Marked on lens rim " P. Angenieux Paris F.50 1:1.5 ". There is no type number

There are 50mm projector ens available in the market. Many have asked on the possibility of using their 50mm projector lens on Leica.

Well, projector lens is not designed for taking pictures, if you really want to, bear in mind :

1/ NO 50mm projector lens can have back focus long enough to work on Leica.

2/ NO 50mm projector lens can cover 24x35mm full frame.

Of course there are users attempt to solve the above problem by using the front lens group only, but please remember :

A.  If you use the front lens group only, your 50mm lens becomes 100mm--125mm, depends on lens construction.

B.  If you use the front lens group only, your f1.5 lens becomes f3.5--f4.5, there is no free lunch.

As such, it is better to find  It has a true 50mm focal length and an effective aperture.

There are several types of Angenieux lens:

Type S (S/S1/S2/S21/S3/S5/S6...) Double Gauss (雙高斯結構) 50mm/75mm/100mm

Type R : RETROFOCUS...主要用在廣角鏡頭 24mm/28mm/35mm

Type p : 類似zeiss的sonnar結構? 主要在望遠...90mm/135mm/150mm

R: Retrofocus type

P: Ernostar-6 type (5片4群)長鏡頭

Y: Ernostar-4 type (4片4群)長鏡頭

S: 雙高斯對稱式(6片4群)標準境

X: Tessar type (四片三群)

Z: Triplet 三片式

All the French lenses produce exquisite and beautiful bokeh,The key charateriestics of the Angenieux lens are the great colour and it's special Bokeh (散景) when the lens are fully opened.

I am hoping for a type S1,

Currently, the Meyer Gorlitz Primoplan 58mm f1.9 lens can only be used with my Sony A7 Mirrorless camera as it has no coupling function. As the lens does not support the range finder, focusing has to be done via LiveView. As such, the only Leica camera that can use such lens are those who have LiveView.

Thus, I have decided to send it to France for lens enhancement and modification so that it can be used in the Leica M3, M4 range finder camera with coupling and in M mount. The process will take several weeks and looking forward to its return.

You know the saying “they don’t make them like they used to”? Apparently, Meyer Optik wants to make them exactly like they used to. And by them, I mean lenses. After resurrecting the Trioplan f2.9/50 and the Trioplan f2.8/100 Meyer Optik are now bringing a new series of lenses to life, starting with the Primoplan 58 f1.9. All via Kickstarter.

Meyer Optik’s two previous kickstarters raised about a million dollars and they were both for lenses from the Trioplan series. Their new kickstarter project is for a lens from the Primoplan series – the 58 f/1.9. This lens is known for its very soft and creamy bokeh.

The lens has 5 glass elements in 4  groups, and will support almost every mount out there:

The kickstarter went up during the weekend and already crushed its $50,000 goal, making $282,364 in about a day. early backers got their hands on the lens at a amazing price of $499, but as rewards were taken, the lens price ramped and is now $649.

Well, it’s not like you can’t get Primoplan lenses on eBay, it’s just that you would have to sell your boat for them (assuming you have a boat in the first place).

An interview with Meyer Optik CEO Dr. Stefan Imms, posted on the Meyer Optik blog explains why the company is making a 58mm lens, shortly after making the Trioplan 50mm lens, being so close in focal length.

Q: Many fans will be excited to hear that you’ve launched a Kickstarter for Primoplan F1.9/58. However the Primoplan 58 is very close in focal length to the Trioplan 50. Why should someone who owns a Trioplan 50 also want to add the Primoplan 58 to their kit?

A: I appreciate your question and, yet, the answer is a bit technical. Both lenses are totally different in their “image language.” While the Trioplan 50 is especially known for its soap bubbles and creates great close-up shots with its front focusing element, the Primoplan 58 is famous for its variety of bokehs. It produces bubbles of different sizes in the same image melting into each other, an effect also called the butterfly bokeh. But just as well, it can give the photographer a more discreet swirling bokeh and great sharpness of the main subject of the image. Furthermore, the bokeh can be creamy and soft creating a dream like atmosphere. All of this in just one lens – a truly fantastic or as we say “wonder lens.” Besides – although this might be surprising – the difference between 50 mm and 58 mm is substantial when it comes to street photography and discreet portraiture.

I would really look at it as a painter having two brushes in his pocket. Depending on the image he wants to create, the subject he is painting or the environment he is in, he will take one or the other.

Sony A7

This is a Sony A7 mirriorless camera. The only reason why I am using this is because the Sony A7  series can take adapters to any lens mount. As such, one can can use Minolta MD lenses. Canon FD lenses, Leica M lens, any of the the M42 lenses. Pentax. Nikon, vintage P. Angeneuix lenses, – they are all adaptable to the Sony Alpha lens mount.Most importantly, is its ability to take Cine lens such as the vintage Lomo lens, Vintage Meyers lenses etc with no need for modification.

Top Vintage Camera shops in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a paradise for various hobbies. For me, the top Vintage Camera shops in Hong Kong are the following;

1. Metour HK. Joe is a nice guy and this is the shop where I got hooked into photography. The shop is next to CWB MTR and its a cool place. I bought Keith and myself our own camera here. Joe has many vintage and new Leica cameras. However, if you are new comer who needs advice, better wait for Joe to be in his shop before you visit (after 330 or 4pm). Shop have many rare Leica Black paint camera M2, M3..be careful...be preprared to pay.

2. 9 Days Photo & Camera. Daniel the owner is a nice guy who often is willing to take the time to teach and educate new photographer like me. He has many nice camera with a clear focus on vintage Leica. As a result of his excellence service and the willingness to teach, I have bought several rare Leica camera and lenses from him. Shop closed on Sunday and Monday. Be careful as he has many nice gears and be prepared to pay.

3. Fotopia. I have not been able to visit the shop owing to relocation. I ahev managed to whatsapp them for enquirers but have not have a close up experience yet.

4. Classical Camera shop near Prince Edward MTR. The prices are very good and you can find a ll range of cameras. Owner is very friendly.  Flat 17, 13/F., Cosmopolitan Centre,760 Nathan Road, Prince Edward, Shop closed on Monday
