Leica ELMAR M
50mm F/2.8 - Collapsible - Black Chrome Lens
My Leica M4
shall be my traveling camera. As such, I have wanted to keep it light weight by matching it with the
smallest-lightest Leica M lens, the Elmar 50mm collapsible. This modern designed
collapsible lens was manufactured in Germany from 1994 through 2007 and this
lens was made in 1996.
The vintage
Elmar lens are half the price but in order to match the M4 Black paint, this is
a better choice. The Leica Elmar 50mm f2.8 lens is a collapsible design so the
lens becomes more compact when not in use and has a 6 bladed diaphragm and
close focus of 0.7 meter. This "new" Elmar-M was a new computation
with modern glass and coatings, providing improved and excellent optical
properties. My black anodized version (code 11 831), made in 1996, weighs 170g
versus the chrome version (code 11 823) weighs 245g. The Elmar-M 50mm f2.8 is,
perhaps, one of the best kept secrets of Leica lenses. Amongst its aficionados
it is rated highly and it’s very much ‘under the radar’ compared with other Leica
lenses, quite often being overlooked for the other, faster 50mms.
